...we arrived in Cochem and went directly
to our hotel, the Alte Thorschenke. What a wonderful hotel! Located right on the ‘main drag' and incorporated into
the old city wall tower. I knew we were very early for check-in - it was only 9 am, so I told the manager that
we could just come back, but he was terrific and gave us a great room located on the back alley. Aah…we were in
heaven again! We parked the car down the street at a garage (the hotel’s garage was full until check-out) and walked
back to the hotel. We finally hit the streets of Cochem around 1 pm to find a nice place for lunch. We wandered
down the street opposite the Mosel river and marveled at the quaint shops and restaurants. We found one and had
a nice lunch of Gulaschsuppe for me and baked chicken, with all the trimmings for Ed. After lunch, we hiked up
to the castle. This castle is very nice and sits majestically on the hillside, overlooking Cochem. It was an overcast
day, but still warm and the trail up took it’s toll on several people, who had to stop and rest. We then walked
back to our hotel and window-shopped along the way. What a wonderful town! I fell in love with Cochem and will
definitely return. It’s so peaceful and easily navigable on foot… a terrific choice for our first 2½ days
in Germany.
