...The Hotel (Garni) zur Post is within about 8 or 10 blocks from the famous Andechs Monastery. The hotel is made up of three separate buildings currently. The main building (in the picture) was the original hotel, home, and butcher shop (see pix on website), with some farm buildings attached behind. In the last decade, the place has expanded to include more rooms behind the main building, as well as two new buildings, separate and at the rear of the property near the deer pasture. The building we always stay in is named "Anna" and it's configuration is basically two separate private rooms with shared bath on each of 3 levels (6 rooms, 3 baths). This has never posed a problem for us, and more often than not, week nights we're the only lodgers on the floor, hence privacy.

Finally, and most importantly, the breakfast offered at the zur Post is almost beyond belief! If you can see the picture of the food bar, it shows only about half the food offered. All types of cold cuts, cheeses, juices, breads, cerals, jellies, butter, milk, coffee, and almost any thing else you can think of. We never have lunch after eating a breakfast here, and our evening dinners are small...

I know of only one other breakfast such as this in Bavaria, and it is that of the sister of Frau Hemberger, whose zimmer is near Seefeld about 13 km north of this site. Very little English is spoken here, but they will all work with those who smile and appreciate their wonderful offerings. The zur Post is a favorite of city dwelling Germans across the land, hence reservations are strongly suggested (Suzie and I are a rare exception to this).

Andechs Monastery sits atop a high hill, with a pay-to-park lot at the bottom of the hill. This is the famous "Andechs hill," which all drinkers must climb to reach the both the church and the famous Andechs Biergartens... and all the fun. Two notes about Andechs: 1) while they serve a strong, highly popular Bier, they also serve limited food; and 2) as in most German Biergartens, as long as you buy the Bier you drink, you can bring your own food to the Biergarten. Andechs Bier is famous wouldwide and also seems more intoxicating than others for some reason. Always remember the steep hill you climbed up to get there is facing you on the trip down. More than one good drinker has rolled down, rather than walked down the hill.

Another good aspect of staying in Andechs is the town of Herrsching is only 3 km away. Herrsching is on the end of the line of the Munich S-Bahn, route S-5. This means you can drive to Herrsching, park for free in the S-Bahn lot, take the S-Bahn for a 20 minute ride into Munich... and sight-see all day. For about 7 € each, Suzie and I get round trip S-Bahn as well as all other surface/subway pubic transportation (i.e. Trams, buses, U-Bahn, S-Bahn, etc) in Munich. That's fun!
