This place was recommended to us by the Tourist Information Office personnel in Beratzhausen. It is located just
off the A3 Autobahn between Regensburg and Nürnberg. Take the Beratzhausen exit and follow the signs to Rechberg
which is a little country village just a few kilometers from the Autobahn exit. The night we were there they had
a buffet which looked gorgeous. The place was packed and the large parking lot was full. We had to park on the
street in a very narrow opening . . . that I remember well. Inside we found an extremely friendly staff who were
neat, attentive, attractive, with cute Dirndl-like uniforms. The girls had a fair to good command of English and
were not afraid to use it. We were surprised to find at least two tables of very well-behaved young American military
personnel with dependents (I assume). They were tight-lipped about where they were stationed so we didn't push
the subject. The nearest US facility I could identify was in Vilseck. We opted for Schnitzel which was very good,
but probably a mistake because the buffet looked just great once I wandered into the next room to check it out.
This was a high middle class type establishment, but prices were very reasonable, atmosphere was extremely friendly,
and German-American interaction was flourishing. I would rate this place an "A". I wanted to go out of
my way to stop there again on my upcoming trip, but we will be passing by on a Tuesday (Ruhetag). It is worth a
stop for dinner or lunch if you are in the Regensburg area on A3. We also had lunch there one day. I believe I
had broccoli creme soup which was excellent.

...The Prösslbräu is a brewery Gasthaus that draws a large German crowd with very few Americans. The
Inn is located 5 miles W of Regensburg about ½ mile N of B8. The rooms are modest but fully equipped. The
food is traditional German & the beer (made on premises) is some of the best in Deutschland. The Inn is only
minutes from Regensberg and 1¼ hours from the Munich airport. The brewery was formerly operated by Dominikan
monks. The monastery grounds included a church for the local people. About 170 years ago the local government declared
that the monks must divest their brewery from the monastery. The Prössl family bought the brewery and agreed
to keep the church maintained for the locals. This agreement satisfied the local government and the Prösslbräu
was born. So today the church and brewery stand side by side inside the walled permises. The Prössl family
built a gasthaus and later added about 20 lodging rooms.
(Ben)
...We arrived at the Prösslbräu around lunchtime, found a nice outside table (finally a bit of sunshine)
and quickly discovered one of the reasons why Erskine recommends this place so highly - the Bier - 'Es war Hervorragende'.
For lunch we had -
Niederbayerischer Krustenbraten in Dunkelbiersauce mit Semmelknödel und Sauerkraut - (7.60 €)
Putensteak in Pfefferrahn mit Pommes Frites und Salat - (7.60 €)
Kinderschnitzel mit Pommes Frites - (5.80 €)

Forsthaus Valepp

Valeppstraße

Tel & Fax - 8026/71281
(Approx 15 km from Rottach/Egern along the Valeppstraße)

...I won't say that Valepp is one of my closest guarded secrets because it's not. Over the years I've referred
to it on the travel boards more than a dozen times. To be quite frank with you, there isn't much there for your
basic American tourist and that's what has held my fascination for at least 14 years now. You normally need a road
atlas of a ratio of at least 1:300,000 to even find the place. Valepp itself is a matter of about a dozen buildings
(some inhabited and some not), a church/chapel and a very rustic hotel (Forsthaus Valepp). It's located about half
a mile from the Austrian border along a toll road just SSE of Rottach/Egern. You can also get there from Spitzingsee
but you'll have to traverse the 6Km on foot. Both roads lead through deep mountain valleys with brooks running
along side. For the most part there is enough room for the roads (quite narrow), the brooks and nothing else. The
road from Enterrotach and Monialm outward is posted at 30 km/hour for a very good reason. Do yourself and the others
on the road a favor and drive very carefully. Your life could depend on it. At any given time there may be only
two English speakers in the valley, one fairly fluent and the other only passable. The fluent one happens to be
the guy (Heinz) that runs the Forsthaus. The other is a friend of mine that has a summer house next to the Forsthaus.
He's an official with the Bavarian Chamber of Commerce and normally lives in München/Passing. He spends a
lot of his vacation time in Valepp.
Fourteen years ago when we were making our first really "exploratory" trips to the German speaking world
I happened to spot the place on a decent road map and actually found my way to it. We stopped at the Forsthaus
for luch, inquired within whether they had rooms to let and the rest is history. As I mentioned before, there is
really nothing to attract your average tourist with two exceptions:
A: The alpine hiking possibilities in the area are great. There are four peaks over 1800M accessible from outside
the front door. Moreover, by driving 4-6Km down the road there are at least another dozen (ranging from 1400-1700M)
available as well.
B: Peace and quiet generaly descends upon the valley around 5:30 PM. During the day when the weather is nice, especially
but not limited to the weekends, the place receives a ton of traffic from both the Tegernsee and Spitzingsee tourists.
Once the sun starts to go down (4:45 PM, deep valley, remember) the tourists either jump in their cars, get on
the bus or hoof it out of there in a hurry. This leaves yourself and the few other houseguests to enjoy their evening
meal out on the terrace with nothing but the birds and the sound from the Grundache (the stream that flows out
in front, across from the parking lot) to break the silence. To my mind this place embodies Bavaria at it's best.
As far as I know, there is nothing like this place extant in the whole of the German speaking world anymore.
Forsthaus Valepp as well as the entire region belongs to the State of Bavaria. Anyone that lives there actually
rents their property from the State, including the people that run the Forsthaus. The restaurant is topnotch. If
they're really busy you might have to wait a bit before your order shows up or to pay the bill but I've never been
disappointed with anything they've ever put before me. The menu is typically Bavarian, offering two kinds of freshly
caught trout (Müllerin and Blau), Hirschmedaillonen, Hirschgulasch (really good!), Schweinsbraten in Dunkelbiersauce,
Wammerl, Bauernschmaus usw. usw.. There's something there for everybody. The daily specials can also be everybit
as mouthwatering. For you cheese lovers there's even something that they refer to as "der Stinker", a
small portion of Miesbacher (similar to Limburger) served with paprika and onions. Try it! You'll like it! They
also offer a cold menu from 3:00 on but you can order anything from any of the menus if you happen to be a houseguest
and pretty much stipulate the time you wish it to be served. They also have a great Kaiserschmarr'n (mit Rosinen
und Apfelsauce).

Restaurant - Biergarten
This old bishop's residence is a terrific choice in Regensburg. Situated right behind the cathedral and about 2
blocks from the Danube, the hotel is partially built into the old Roman wall of the city. As the pictures will
attest to, this hotel is beautifully appointed. The greatest feature of this property is the tranquil garden area,
in front of the main entrance. A whimsical water fountain, depicting a jolly bishop and his gaggle of geese, is
the centerpiece of this lovely Biergarten. The Biergarten gets very busy during the dinner hours and no wonder...
the food is outstanding! A large menu, consisting of a wide variety of culinary options is offered and the service
is impeccable. If you don't stay here, while in Regensburg, try to make it for dinner!
