Garden terrace on the Mosel
November to April - Closed
We picked up the Mosel route at Trier and followed the river past the miles and miles of vineyards. We passed barges,
ruins and tiny attractive villages, some of which we noted their names as they looked inviting for another trip.
But this time we had a destination in mind?.Beilstein and our old, friendly Haus Lipmann (80 Euro). We arrived
sans reservation which has proved disappointing in the past but yes, he had a room, number 4, where we had stayed
several times before. It comes complete with balcony and view of the Mosel. We drank the house wine, best wine
in all of Germany, ate a great supper, and retired to our balcony to watch the road and river traffic.

Ten minutes from town central. 1.5 km from train station
..The Hotel Villa Hugel is on a hill overlooking the city. It's about a 10-15 minute walk through a nice area to
get to the center of town. We just parked our car at the hotel and walked into town each day. Our room was large,
clean, had a balcony overlooking town, breakfast was very large (included in the room rate) and we had dinner there
one night and it was one of the best meals we had on the entire trip! The hotel staff was very accommodating and
friendly. I recommend it highly.

Located next door to the Seilbahn (cable
car ride to the Niederwald monument)
While walking back to the hotel we spot an interesting looking little garden restaurant with overhead fans nearby
and have our final dinner at the Restaurant-Cafe Seilbahn. Good food - excellent wait staff. Dee Dee enjoys a Putensteak
in Pefferrahmsauce mit Pommes und Salat (10 ?), and Amy and I have to have our final Wiener Schnitzels mit Pommes
und Salat (8.50 ?). Several 'Bitte ein Bit' Bitburger Pils and we are back to the zimmer for a final repack of
our luggage...

...For the evening's entertainment and refreshments we take the short backroad once again to Rüdesheim and
we locate a restaurant with some nice looking outside tables. The weather is great and we want to enjoy it while
we can. This place - The Graf von Rüdesheim at Oberstraße 35 - is just catty-corner to the upper entrance
to the famous Drosselgasse wine alley. It is still early in the evening and the nightly summer crowds have not
yet arrived. The restaurants along this area are very competitive with their prices and almost all have live music
to get your attention. Further down into the Drosselgasse the competition is so intense that you can hardly hear
one band over the others next door. The "Graf" is what we are looking for tonight and we settle on Rahmgoulasch
and Schinken Omeletts. Excellent meal - excellent service - excellent Bier - the world is good tonight.

Most of the little towns along the Rhine roll up their sidewalks pretty early so if you are looking for some night life in the Rhine Gorge area - Rüdesheim is the place to go. We arrive well before the nightly summer crowd and look for a nice place to lite for that last big meal. The girls want to go where the action is or will be later and that is the Drosselgasse. Having already determined exactly how much money we have left to blow for our final night I let them pick their spot. They select (and I'm sure one of the main reasons was the suave waiter) the Drosselhof (near the top of the alley). The Drosselhof is the oldest winehouse (280 years old) on the Drosselgasse and probably the most expensive. This lively place is open seven days a week (March - November) with live music from 8 pm to 4 am. We select a nice table on the outside terrace and roost for a couple of hours. Everyone enjoys their last Schnitzel and Goulaschsuppe and several large Bier Every hour on the hour everything and everyone stops to listen to the Glockenspiel in the tower of the Rüdesheimer Schloss Hotel just above our heads. Excellent meals - great atmosphere...

Hotel zum Römer
Moselstraße 15

...Several hotels have built wooden terraces along the river just across the street from their restaurants and
these are just right for the unusually warm weather we are experiencing today. The Römer's tables with large
umbrellas and a nice breeze blowing in from the Mosel are perfect for a meal or just nursing Bier or a glass of
wine. We select an Omelette mit Schinken und Salat (7.50 ?), Weiner Schnitzel with Pommes Frites und Salat (8 ?),
and I try a Römerschnitzel mit Speck, Spiegelie, Pommes und Salat (9 ?). We take our time enjoying the day
and while Amy spends her time feeding bread to the local swans and ducks, we relax with cool libations.

This nice little restaurant is located on the Mosel and just around the corner from the Haus Würzgarten where
I was staying in 2005. Had a nice dinner with Carolyn and Jim (Stammtisch members) who drove northeast from Schleich
(near Trier) where they were renting an apartment.
Beverly and Chuck were suppossed to make it also but we later found out they had problems with their flight from
the east coast. Good food and chit chat and back to my Zimmer for the night to pack and CNN updates.

(Larry) ...there is one thing left under my control, and that is where
to have dinner. It just so happens that right outside the T.I. office, a couple of doors down, is a cozy little
place called the ?Café Restaurant Rusticana?. Both Ben and I, singly and together, have been coming here
for years. The old gentleman and his wife, the owners, always remember our faces. The Frau even remembered me ordering
roast chicken with Pommes from
last year, so I say ?set ?em up again.? Some Goulasch soup, salad, and a couple of Bier later and I waltz out for
only 8.50 Euro...
(Ben) ...Good food - great prices - very friendly owners - love the protected outside table area...

...While looking for a good place to linger over a final German dinner I finally spoted the perfect place - the
Winzerkeller at Oberstraße 33. They had a single table located just outside their main door on the street
which was placed there just for these two Texans looking for THE spot to relax and people watch. The Winzerkeller
is located directly at the top of the Drosselgasse which has to be the most visited and trafficked wine alley in
Germany. Everyone going down or coming up the alley has to walk right by our table and we are just soaking it all
in. People watching is one of our favorite international sports. We were certain some member of the Stammtisch
would walk by any minute. We finished off our two-week Schnitzel fest with an excellent Wiener Schnitzel vom Kalb,
mit Pommes Frites and a nice smooth Bier. Ausgezeichnet!
