Roosia) ...really enjoyed this place in Blindau (1.5 km south of the village of Reit im Winkl),
half way up the mountain, with Gerlinde and Toni Heigenhauser. Neither spoke much English, but it was a hoot every
morning as Gerlinde talked to us during Frühstück, introduced us to her son Toni and to her husband (also
Toni). One day we took a bus up the mountain to a Gasthaus where the Berg Fex'n Trio was playing. The place was
packed, we were the only Americans, but we got to know people quickly. Remember the heat in Sep 2003? This was
Oct at about 1300 meters. It snowed ... The apartment itself was not fancy, but had central floor heating and two
bathrooms as well as everything one expects in a Ferienwohnung. The location was a mixed blessing. We had to drive
the kilometer into town, but we were located near the trailhead/parking/mountain bus. The day we went up, I drank
beer all day and never had to drive an inch. Toni is the greenskeeper at the Reit/Koessen (Austria) golf course
and plays in a local Tyrolian/Bavarian style band. Gerlinde gave us one of his CD's which I value. I always chuckle
at the names of some of the songs - "Fräulein, wo bleibt mei Halbe" . . . "Die Liebe und der
Wein" . . . and "Muh macht die Kuh" ...Gary
(Comments by CGRAM434) ...sometimes
you remember places where you have stayed not so much for the quality of the rooms but because of the people you
meet there. This was definitely true of the Florian. Although I would say that the apartment was very comfortable,
Gerlinde made it memorable. She was patient with my limited German and helped expand my vocabulary. Often it took
us a while to get though breakfast because we had such great conversations. There was a swimming pool right outside
our terrace. I believe it was heated and had a cover, but we never used it. If we had stayed in the warmer months
and had time would it be a big plus, especially if you traveled with children. The Gästhaus up in the mountain
was a lot of fun, but coming down the mountain in snow was a heart stopping experience for me. Driving in the snow
was never one of my most favorite things, but coming down a mountain with snow sticking to the windshield...whew!
Even with the snow, the day was pure enjoyment and would do it again. ...Carolyn
