(Comments by PStuyvsant) ...I first came across the Gutshof Zum Schluxen (formerly a farm called the Schluxenhof) in '96. I had read about it as being one of King Ludwig's favorite hangouts when he would go out on his excursions through the countryside. He in fact stayed overnight many times and his room is upstairs on the far right corner as you enter the front door. Unfortunately, when I arrived it was already booked or I would have had a real historic experience. I did however end up with a very nice double, with balcony, and my own cow pasture for a view for just DM40 including breakfast. Ben and I stopped by for dinner during the 2000 trip (try the delicious Tiroler Gröstl and Adam Bräu Hell bier), and I was there again for a Bierstop in '01. You might say we kind of took a liking to the place. Prost...

The Schluxen is located in the tiny out of the way village of Unterpinswang just inside the Austrian border, and a short distance from Füssen and Reutte. Just a few farms, a church and the Schluxen, and that's it. Definitely an off the beaten path kind of place. The previous owners (who have since moved on) completely renovated and modernized the place in the early 90's. It's main claim to fame is that Rick Steves has stayed here several times (there is a small brass plaque with his name on it nailed to one of the shade trees in the parking lot), and naturally it remains a favorite stopping place for his organized bus tours.

If you are looking for peace and quiet and like to blend in with the locals, then you can't go wrong with the Schluxen.

(Comments by IM RW) ...We spent several nights at the Schluxen. The property appears to be a working farm with cattle, deer, horses and rabbits. It appears that the owners have recently remodeled the hotel and restaurant. Our room appeared to be almost new with spotless knotty pine floors, furniture and trim, and was quite large with a large (in our experience) bath/shower. Stairways were wide and easily navigable with stuffed animals decorating the landings. There was an honor refrigerator on the 1st landing with beer, soft drinks, etc. at grocery store prices instead of the usual stratospheric hotel prices. The restaurant/bar seems to be a gathering place for locals to eat and socialize. Waking up to the sounds of cow bells as the cattle were being moved from field to field and the haunting sounds of Coo Coos from the nearby woods was a fantastic way to start the day. The staff was warm, friendly, and quick to help out in any way they could.
