(Fadoinka) ...I booked friends of ours in the Goldener Hecht in 2000 and they loved it. In 2005 we were meeting up with our friends' daughter, for dinner, and I thought this would be an easy location for her to find. Located at the foot of the Alte Brucke, the Goldener Hecht claims a fabulous location in Heidelberg. The famous Vetters Brewery is located right down the Steingasse and it provides lovely views of the Neckar River from it's front rooms.

Our room was quite comfortable and had a nice, little balcony with a table and 2 chairs. Unfortunately, the balcony was under repair and off-limits. No big deal, as we had a third bed and another table and chairs in a little offset of the room. The bathroom was terrific. Finally an enclosed shower which actually contained water. No wet floors. The mattress was quite comfortable and we slept well here.

The breakfast room only contains 4 tables, so guests are asked what time they want to eat upon check-in. I told the receptionist that we probably wouldn't eat breakfast, but she encouraged us to reserve a time, in case we changed our minds. About 10 minutes after our reserved time, they did call our room to see if we would be eating or not. Very thoughtful of them.

Also, upon check-in, the receptionist was extremely kind. She asked if we wanted her to address us in English or Deutsch. She said a lot of guests like to practice their German with her. Again, very thoughtful gesture.

All in all, the Goldener Hecht is a nice hotel, based mainly on it's location, cleanliness, and friendly staff (both upon check-in and check-out). The tavern, located in the basement of the same building, is not associated with the hotel however. (Noted only in case you might want to charge a meal to your room.) But, it's a great, atmospheric place with a nice menu. Used to be one of Goethe's favorite haunts. We only had drinks here but greatly enjoyed the ambience.
