Day 1 - Arrive Frankfurt Airport - Pick up baggage - clear customs - follow overhead signs to the car rental section - pick up car - follow Autobahn signs to A3 - (Würzburg or Nürnberg). A3 (Frankfurt to Dreieck Würzburg-West) (near Kist) - Pick up Romantic Road south (A81) to Tauberbischofsheim - (B290) to Bad Mergentheim - (B19) to Igersheim - Weikersheim - Creglingen - Rothenburg o.d.T. (190 km)

Day 2 - Discover Rothenburg o.d.T. and surrounding area - Night Watchman's tour - Crime and Punishment museum - several beautiful churches - walk the wall - recover from jet lag

Day 3 - Take Autobahn A6 towards Nürnberg then switch to A9 to Munich (if including the Romantic Road take B25 to Donauwörth then B2 to Augsburg and A8 to Munich) - take A99 to go around Munich then on to A8 to Chiemsee - afternoon visit to Herrenchiemsee

Airport Accommodations

This is a good basic itinerary if you are looking for max highlights of southern Germany in a 2 week span - pick from several possible daily activities - no one-nighters - no large cities - maximum time in the hills and mountains of Bavaria and the Schwarzwald - route can be easily reversed and adjusted - there are many zimmer frei and farms to choose from in all overnight locations listed - at many Bauernhöfe you will not pay more than 30 Euro per doubleroom and singles can be had for 15 Euro or less (depending on the location) - if you are traveling with children the farms become the perfect respite during a long trip.

(2 nights in Black Forest)

Day 2 - Explore the central Black Forest - Gengenbach - Vogtsbauernhof - Furtwangen - Urach - Burg Hohenzollern

Day 3 - Depart for Füssen via B33 to Bodensee - pick up B12 in direction of Kempten - afternoon visit to Tegelberg - shop Füssen

Day 4 - Drive thru Austria - Sommerrodelbahn at Biberwier/Lermoos

Day 3 - Drive southeast on A61 - via Worms - A6 around Mannheim - to Heidelberg

Day 4 - Discover Heidelberg (city and castle) - Eberbach - Hirschhorn (stop for lunch or a Bier on the terrace of Hirschhorn castle hotel - the view is outstanding)

Day 5 - Early departure for Rothenburg o.d.T. - via Castle Road - Zwingenberg - Burg Guttenberg (Birds of Prey show 1100 & 1500 hrs) - Bad Wimpfen
