Moser Zimmer

In June of 1999, Bavaria and Tirol was suffering through a serious heat spell, and the A/C in the car felt good as we drove. Arriving in Rothenburg, we stopped at our favorite Rothenburg zimmer of Herr and Frau Moser, #12 Spittlegasse (Yes, the couple Rick Steves also mentions). The street front and building of the little yellow zimmer is only about 18 feet wide. Herr und Frau Moser remembered us from year’s past and happily give us our favorite upstairs back room (rear of their zimmer) with a view of the wall… and the wonderful cool breeze flowing in from the woods beyond. As we looked down from the window, we saw the beautiful, orderly little private gardens of Herr Moser and his neighbors. Raising our eyes we see the Wall of Rothenburg as it comes from the east, passes just behind our little room and meanders on westward to the Garden area.

On the other side of the wall the land drops off into
the Tauber River and up again to the heavily wooded hills beyond. The cool breezes are so fresh and so welcome
in this country without air conditioned homes. And the quiet is so peaceful…away from the street noises.
Our room is on the “2nd floor” which is really the “third” floor in the U.S. See the little “attic windows” in
the picture? That’s the level our room is really on.

The last flight of stairs is almost like a ladder-stairway
it’s so steep. And upstairs, there are two rooms: The larger front room overlooking the street, and the smaller
back room overlooking the wall and the countryside. This is “our room.” The bathroom is “communal” and between
the two rooms. Actually, if you have a family, this is a great area for the kids in the front room and parents
in the back room.
It’s small but very adequate. Very clean, always! And the past two times we’ve stayed the rates for Suzie and
I were approximately DM65 or DM70. Frau Mosier’s breakfasts are also very nice, and come included in the rate.
Another important reason we like to stay at the Moser’s zimmer is the close proximity to town. Herr Moser does
not speak English, but he does take good care of his patrons. He carefully instructs us to park on the street,
ACROSS the street from his zimmer (read the street signs!!) where you can leave your car day and night. Very handy
if you continually need to get into the car for various items. CAUTION: Do NOT park directly in front of Herr
Moser’s zimmer because your car must be moved by 0900 hours each morning.
Once again, our independent travel was falling into place beautifully. It was now the 4th day of our short 11
day trip. Our 5th trip to Rothenburg was celebrated that evening by taking the Night Watchman’s Tour of the walled
city, a tour everyone should take to really better understand the town and its history.

The next day was shopping…and shopping…and, well, somebody’s got to buy that stuff! One little venture outside the Rothenburg walls was to the Mayor’s house in the valley.

In the picture, you see four crests above the entryway.
In centuries past, each crest was that of a visiting dignitary who stayed at this home. These crests were a source
of great pride to the home owners (similar to our “George Washington Slept Here” boasts) Also, the two slits above
and on either side of the doorway were for the chains that raised or lowered the draw bridge across the moat to
the entry. It’s a long, long walk from Rothenburg walls to this little Mayors House...(Rick Steves doesn’t tell
you how far you have to walk) more fun to drive.
Where ever you stay in Rothenburg, enjoy the town! We don’t like the isolation of “Big Places to Sleep” and our
little travel secrets have often proved (to us at least) that our attitude brings us far more fun, excitement,
and otherwise unavailable experiences.
Have Fun! Bill and Suzie (BHICKOX3)
