Have you overnighted at any of the many Castle Hotels of Germany? Please comment on your experiences...

BavariaBen ...One of the most reasonably priced castle hotels along the middle Rhine river valley is Hotel Burg Reichenstein above the village of Trechtingshausen. I have been taking family and friends to this friendly old Schloss since the early 80s. It's one of those castles that you can tour on your own without a tour guide and it's fun to walk around this place when you and your family are the only ones in the castle. Great views from the top! We stayed overnight at the Reichenstein in 93 and if you want to stay at a castle and are on a tight budget - this is probably the place for you. You don't actually stay in the castle but on the castle grounds. The hotel is situated where the old horse stables were located but the rooms are nice enough especially if you get one with a view of the Rhine. This castle (one of the oldest on the Rhine) is privately owned and has been restored many times. It's loaded with cast iron oven plates, old weapons and the antlers of alot of different critters. Here is one of the best websites on the internet detailing a castle on the Rhine. Schloss Reichenstein

Fadoinka ...I have only been fortunate enough to stay overnight in one castle...The Rhine Castle - Schönburg, located in Oberwesel on the Rhine. I can't imagine any other castle hotel being any better than this one! The public rooms are lovely...the views of the Rhine are breathtaking...the staff was simply superb...and our rooms were terrific! One really gets a feel for living in a castle in this beautiful hotel with it's short doors and curving, narrow stairways. But, the rooms and bathrooms contain modern amenities and are extremely comfortable. We had a corner room with views of the Rhine from both sides...just magnificent! During the day, it's so much fun to have a bier in the courtyard or to wander the fields located behind the castle. At night, the terraces are aglow with soft candlelight and beautiful flower boxes...it's so serene...like one has been transported to a fantasy land. I just adore this place. I can't think of one, single negative comment about the whole experience of staying at Schönburg...and...it truly is an experience! From arrival to departure, we were treated like royalty. Oh...how I long to return! Val (Read more about Val's experience at the Schönburg here)

BSmith8121 ...I agree about Burg Reichenstein. The castle is interesting and the view from the tower is fantastic. As to the hotel, I am afraid when we got there (2 couples) they had botched our faxed reservation and had no room (someone forgot to record it). This was our "first night" stay and I was hosting an elderly couple who had never been to Germany.. After rather strong words, they found one room with an obstructed view and another single which they converted into a double - both with a toilet down the hall. All in all- once we got over the cramped rooms, we enjoyed our visit. I would like to stay there again and experience the full experience of the hotel. And I have recommended it several times.

Tabe41 ...Castle Hotel Burg Colmberg is a nicely restored castle in a beautiful setting in Colmberg - located 18 km east of Rothenburg o.d.T. on the Burgenstraße. We were there for 2 nights. The rooms were very clean and inviting. We ate breakfast there and it was very good with a big variety of foods to choose from served as a buffet or continental. There were maids for the rooms and a waitress in the dining room but we had to handle our own luggage. There are 3 floors and no elevator so if you stay there be sure you know what floor your staying on. The castle itself was clean and so were the grounds.

JRichards09 ..Several years ago my husband and I were visiting the Heidelberg area and drove beside the Neckar River in the direction of Heilbronn. We could not resist the opportunity to stay at the beautiful castle hotel in Hornberg to celebrate our anniversary. It is near the towns of Neckarzimmern and Hassmersheim sitting up on one of the hillsides. This was an experience we will never forget. The rooms were so nice and from our room and the restaurant where we were seated the first night we had unbelievable panoramic views of the river and valley below. For the price (about $100) it was well worth it and one of the most endearing memories of our trip to Germany. We highly recommend it to anyone wanting to stay at a castle hotel.
