(BavariaBen - traveling with PStyuvsant) ...We found this farm during a previous visit to Germany while walking the footpaths and narrow backroads in the vicinity of the Wieskirche (world famous rococo pilgrimage church created by the Zimmermann brothers in the 18th century that sits in a meadow not far from the Royal Castles. Dominikus Zimmermann built a house next door to the church he loved and couldn't bear to leave and lived there until his death in 1766)

The Wieskirche

As you walk the narrow path in front of the church and circle around the farm land adjacent to church the Scholderhof farm is located just behind the Gasthof Schweiger (which is where the original house of Dominikus Zimmermann was located). I always wondered how wonderful it would be to live in such close proximity to this beautiful church and this year we were able to enjoy two days of this little piece of heaven.

I reserved this farm about 8 months prior to my vacation and soon after we arrived we were greeted by the lovely Frau Gindhart who was expecting us. We were shown to a large, very clean apartment with enough beds to sleep at least 5 persons (ideal for a small family). Entryway, nice large kitchen (balcony access from kitchen and main sleeproom with the view on the right), large tiled bath with shower (and plenty of towels), TV in kitchen, phone in entryway. We paid 50 Euro per day total (including breakfast). This farm gets my "favorite farm" of the trip award for 2003.

The first person to greet us when we initially arrived was one of our Stammtisch members - Charlie (DrCBK). Charlie and his family were visiting the Wieskirche that afternoon and we had arranged to meet for a Bier. After checking in at the farm we walked around to the Cafe-Gasthof Schweiger (located near the front door of the church) and enjoyed some time with Charlie and family.

During our two days here we drove in to Füssen each afternoon and checked our emails via a small Internet cafe just off the Fußgängerzone (6 Euro per hour). If you feel the need to go online when visiting Germany I would suggest you be prepared to spend about 15 minutes familiarizing yourself with your means of access (especially those of you with AOL mailboxes). Most of the places we found with internet connections redireced us to aol.de each time we tried to access aol.com. That is not so much of a problem if you are familiar with the German words for such terms as Copy, Paste, Read, Delete, etc. Also be prepared to use the German keyboard to copy, paste, etc since many mouses did not have 'right click' capability. Trying to recalibrate your fingers to switch the 'y' and 'z' as you type can be frustrating as well and finding commas, colons, and other symbols can be fun but time consuming. The aol.de was not nearly as user friendly as the aol.com version for most American tourists.

For our full day of exploring the region we mapped out a circular route which included an early morning drive to my favorite farm of our family trip in 2002 - the Popplerhof near Hopferau - where I surprised Frau Poppler with a recipe and the fixings for a Texas Pecan Pie. My Frau Dee Dee insisted that I stop by and see her and thank her for her kindness during our stay last year.

We continued on into Austria via Reutte and after acquiring a windshield vignette at a service station - PStuyvsant's first mission was to make his annual "Stroh's" rum run at the Austrian border (always seems to have the best prices).

Mission accomplished - 6 liters of the elixir of life - Stroh's Rum

With the weather holding and no rain in sight, we then headed towards Lermoos, Austria and our favorite Sommerrodelbahn.

Zugspitze from Lermoos, Austria

Two trips up the new 6-seater chairlift and two quick luge runs later we head in the direction of Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Ehrwald but first a quick photo op of the backside of the Zugspitze from Lermoos.

After a short walk around the town center in Garmisch we stop at one of Larry's favorite little self-service restaurants just behind the Post Office where we have an excellent inexpensive lunch.

Continuing north we slowly drive by the Ettal monastery and walk the streets of Oberammergau for about an hour looking for any kind of bargain and a USA Today (needed an NFL fix).

Driving north over the Echelsbacher Bridge we continued on to the village of Rottenbuch to take a look at another beautifully ornate church.

After a brief pause at the farm in Wies we take the backroads towards Füssen and pay a late afternoon visit to the Royal Castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. We catch one of the last buses for the day up to the Marienbrücke to get a few photos of Ludwig's masterpiece before dusk and calling it a day.

Our last morning in the area we enjoy another excellent Frühstück courtesy of Frau Gindhart and bid

Auf Wiedersehen until the next trip...
